Directing

How the director decides

It watches every camera and listens to the music, then cuts the way a director in the booth would.

Korte's jazz and band director was shaped by hand by people who have directed cameras professionally, and tested over full-length shows.

What it listens for

The music leads. It hears who is playing and follows them: the soloist when a solo starts, the trading between players, the singer through each phrase. It stays calm in quiet passages and gets livelier when the band takes off.

What it watches for

It keeps checking every camera throughout the show. A camera that's black, blurry, bumped or shaking isn't used until it's steady again.

What always wins

The important moment always wins: a new soloist, the singer's phrase, or a bad shot leaving the air.

When something goes wrong

If anything goes wrong while it's deciding, it goes to the wide shot and carries on.
